Claude AI course: what to learn first
A good Claude AI course teaches you to give Claude the right context, ask for a clear format, and check what it returns, using your own work as the practice material. You do not need to code, and the habits carry over to ChatGPT and Gemini.
This guide explains what to learn first, where Claude is a good fit, and how to start with a free live workshop.

- ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini on your own work
- No coding needed
What is Claude, and why learn it?
Claude is an AI assistant made by Anthropic. You type or paste in text, ask for something, and it replies in plain language. People use it to draft and edit writing, summarise long documents, think through a problem and check their own reasoning.
Learning Claude on its own is rarely the goal. Most people end up using two or three assistants, so a course that teaches one tool in isolation leaves you stuck the day your employer approves a different one.
What should a Claude AI course teach first?
Start with the five skills that make every answer better:
- Context. Say who you are, who the reader is and what the text is for, before you ask.
- Format. Ask for the shape you need: a table, five bullet points, a 150-word email.
- Examples. Paste one good example of what you want and ask Claude to match its tone.
- Your own documents. Give Claude a policy, a report or meeting notes and ask questions about that text instead of about the whole internet.
- Checking. Ask for the source of each claim and verify anything that matters before you use it.
These skills take an afternoon to learn and save time every week after that.
Want to try this with a host on hand? Join the free live workshop on Zoom: three hours, Saturday or Sunday, 12:00-15:00 SAST (10:00-13:00 UK, 11:00-14:00 CET), working with ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini on your own work. Save my free seat.
How is Claude different from ChatGPT and Gemini?
All three do the same broad job, and each is updated often, so any list of differences goes out of date within months. Rather than memorise a comparison, run one real task through each tool and judge the results yourself:
- Pick a task you do every week, such as summarising a long report or drafting a client email.
- Give the same prompt, with the same context, to Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini.
- Compare accuracy, tone and how much editing each answer needs.
- Keep the tool that suits that task, and write down why.
This takes about twenty minutes and teaches you more than reading reviews. Our guide to AI courses in South Africa explains how to judge a course in general.
Do I need to pay for Claude?
No, you can start with the free versions of the tools. Free plans have usage limits that can interrupt a long task, so check the current plan details on each provider's own website before you decide to pay for anything. Many employers also provide an approved tool, which is worth asking about first.
Can I put work documents into Claude?
Only if you are allowed to. Before you paste in a document, remove names, ID numbers and client details, and check whether your employer has a policy on AI tools. In South Africa, personal information is covered by the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). This is general information and not legal advice, so confirm your obligations with an attorney if you handle sensitive data.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. Claude works in plain language, so anyone who can write a clear email can learn to write a clear prompt. Building a simple assistant or automating a repetitive task does not need programming either.
What should I do in my first week?
- Choose one repeated task and write down what a good result looks like.
- Run it in Claude with context, a format and one example.
- Note what you had to fix, then add that to the prompt and run it again.
- Save the prompt that worked, and reuse it next week.
Doing this live with a host is faster, because someone can show you why a prompt failed and what to change.
What does the free workshop cover?
Over three hours on Zoom you work through choosing the right tool, writing prompts that work, researching and drafting quickly, getting answers from your own documents, making images and slides, building your own AI assistant, automating a repetitive task, making a simple web app without code, and understanding AI agents. You leave with a 30-day plan. Our hosts have taught more than 12,000 people.
It runs every weekend, on Saturday and again on Sunday, so you can pick the day that suits you. The times are set for South Africa, and the UK and Europe times above work for learners there too.
No coding needed. Join live: the questions and breakouts only happen live, and you leave with something you can use on Monday. Save my free seat.
